Virginia Tech research confirms 1 in 3 Deer Ticks in Giles and Pulaski Counties have Lyme Disease.

Lyme Disease is the 6th fastest growing Disease in the United States according to the CDC.  Giles Co. has 9 times more cases of Lyme Disease  in 2012 than in 2011 .The VDH says the New River Valley has record number of cases for 2012......Giles County has reported cases of Lyme disease since the early 1990s, as well as other tick-borne diseases like Rocky-Mountain Spotted Fever, Babesiosis, and Ehrlichiosis Bartonella.

As of 2010, the Virginia State Health Department declared Giles County endemic for Lyme disease. 1,245 cases of Lyme disease were reported in Virginia in 2010. According to the Center for Disease Control, the numbers of unreported cases may be ten times as high.

Lyme disease is contracted from the bite of an infected tick.  A circular red rash sometimes shows up with the tick bite. This is an early warning to seek medical treatment.  When diagnosed early and treated aggressively,  antibiotic treatment can cure the infection.  Other cases require a longer duration of antibiotic therapy.

Anyone bitten by a tick should save the tick so we can check the Tick Identification Guide. If it is a tick known to carry Lyme disease, we can send it to a lab to be tested for a charge of $75. For help identifying a tick, please contact me, Mauricia Shanks, using the information provided on the "contact us" page.  Remember, Lyme disease can be prevented.
